One of the most overlooked aspects of website SEO are image alt tags. Have your images been optimised with alt tags?
Here are some reasons to use alt tags…
✅ Alt tags were originally created to increase accessibility for visually impaired visitors using screen readers. A screen reader will read the alt tag of the image so it should be descriptive enough to give context.
✅ If the image file can’t or doesn’t load, the alt tag will display instead.
✅ THE BIGGEST REASON: Alt tags are used by web crawlers that determine your ranking in search engines (this is the SEO bit!). Using highly relevant, descriptive keywords will help bolster the grade Google will give your website, meaning you could rank a lot better.
➡️ Be descriptive but keep it short for the best results – AND avoid stuffing in too many keywords, otherwise you can be penalised.
